Lower School: Jewish Studies

As students come into Senior Kindergarten, they have Jewish Studies daily.  Student Hebrew becomes more fluent as they build skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. First they will learn to read, and then they read to learn.

Students learn about holidays and Shabbat, mitzvot and tefilot and live each day in the school’s inclusive Jewish community.

When you visit our school you will observe:

  • Hebrew on the walls and in the halls
  • The TaL AM Hebrew program in first and second grade that invites students to learn with all their senses
  • Rosh Chodesh celebrations for the beginning of the new Hebrew month
  • Kabbalat Shabbat– with song, movement, tefila, and Parshat HaShavua
  • Mitzvot beyn adam l’chavero – the mitzvot  that govern human interactions - this is how we treat our friends
  • Torah study – fourth graders study B’reisheet, Genesis, ask questions, and make meaning of the classic texts
  • Israeli and Jewish folkdance
  • Children singing Hebrew songs
  • A wide range of students with different learning styles and needs
  • Teachers who are authentic Jewish role models of varying types
  • General and Jewish studies teachers working collaboratively throughout the day, to plan curriculum, and develop teaching strategies that engage all students
