LS: Support Services

A part of the Day School's mission to teach the whole child speaks to nurturing a child's growth socially and emotionally, as well as academically. We provide support services so that every child's needs can be met. Each grade level in the Lower School has a social worker and learning specialist assigned to that grade, who get to know the students well, and are available for support.

The Lower School's philosophy of social work is to provide support, guidance and opportunities for children and families regarding developmental tasks at each grade level. A social worker is assigned to each grade who is available to parents, teachers and administrators for consultation regarding developmental and/or social-emotional questions. A range of services are offered for students on an as-need basis. These opportunities can provide practice, support and/or strategies in specific areas and are done in individual, group or classroom settings. For example, "Lunch bunches" are open to all students as a time to talk with peers, and gives students a platform for working on problem-solving skills, relationship-building and more; "Banana Splits" provide small, age-based group support for children of divorced families. In order to provide the strongest relationship possible for families and children, social workers loop with each class to provide an ongoing relationship during one's tenure at the Day School.

In addition to social work, we also provide learning services support to children who have special learning needs. Our Learning Specialists work with small groups and in the classrooms to help students reach their potential. They are available for screenings and will refer families to outside professionals when needed. Our network of resource specialists at the Day School are extremely qualified professionals who love to work with children, and are dedicated to partnering with our teachers and parents to help students learn in the best way possible.
