Student Activities
After-School Program
Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School has a wide variety of enriching after-school activities, many of which are developed and taught by our talented faculty members. Options range from jazz band, martial arts or yoga to art studio, chess or science & engineering. Three times a year students have an opportunity to register for new classes that appeal to diverse interests and talents. For questions about the after-school program, smervis [at] bzaeds [dot] org (contact Sara Mervis).
Student Council
Middle School students are able to hone their leadership skills by participating in Student Council, which leads weekly meetings, generates ideas for new programs and helps to plan student events. For questions about Student Council, contact bapplebaum [at] bzaeds [dot] org (Barbara Applebaum) or smervis [at] bzaeds [dot] org (Sara Mervis).
Performing Arts
Who needs New York when BZAEDS is located right on Broadway Street in Chicago? Our BZAEDS on Broadway program helps seventh- and eighth-graders work collaboratively to put on incredible performances of musical theater. Performing together builds confidence in front of an audience—something that is useful for the rest of students’ lives. Building this confidence begins at an early age, starting with our early childhood Thanksgiving feast, continuing through Lower School with our Leona Molotsky Hanukkah Music Festival and culminating in middle school with the seventh-grade play and the unforgettable Morton Reisman Eighth Grade Operetta.
Athletics
Students in grades six through eight can participate in interscholastic team sports including soccer (co-ed) in the fall, basketball (boys & girls) in the winter and softball (girls) in the spring. For students interested in running, including younger students, we also offer Girls on the Run teams and a before-school running club. A highlight of not only our athletic program but also of our regular physical education program is the 35,000-sq. ft. soft green turf field adjacent to the school. For questions regarding athletics or physical education, contact mgreenburg [at] bzaeds [dot] org (Mark Greenburg) or rkruss [at] bzaeds [dot] org (Renee Kruss).
